Top 10 rumors about the iPhone 5

The iPhone was first launched onto the market in 2007, and it’s no doubt in anyone’s mind that it changed the whole mobile industry. Nowadays, the very same phone has a lot of fans, but it also sparked huge controversy whenever new features were added or a new model was launched.

Right now, the rumor mill  is at full capacity, and forums, websites and blogs everywhere are buzzing with information regarding the upcoming killer phone from Apple. Here’s our top ten list of the most discussed rumors regarding the iPhone 5.

10. No more home button. This is one rumor that has spread even before the launch of the iPhone 4, and despite the fact that we encounter it everywhere, we have a tough time believing that the home button will disappear altogether from the next generation of iPhones.

However, there are several clues that this might be a reality one day. Apple has been slowly implementing multi-touch gestures in its mobile operating system, and they have been known to make radical changes in the past, in order to keep their designs as minimalistic as possible. But a home button to disappear just like that? It’s just too much for now.

9. Another off-chance rumor we caught speaks of a LED incorporated into the iPhone’s front, near the secondary camera. While there were speculations that Apple would implement a secondary Flash for the front camera, this goes a little further: the LED would supposedly notify us of incoming calls, messages or other notifications, by blinking or simply turning on every now and then.

This is not a new concept, as these LEDs have been incorporated into Nokia phones, Blackberries and many other devices ever since mobile phones were invented.

But we have to say pass to this one as well, as we simply don’t see it go with the overall Apple style.

8. A low cost model. This rumor has been going about for quite some time. It simply states that starting with the iPhone 5, Apple will also introduce a low cost model into their line of products. This one would be much more accessible to users, and, naturally, it would be stripped of many of the high-performance features that make the iPhone a top of the line product.

Once again, this goes against the very soul of Apple mentality, and it’s hard to believe that Steve Jobs will allow such a decision. Apple products are known for everything but their cheap price tags, and even though this will boost the sales of the next generation device, we don’t see Apple making such a drastic change in their tactic.

7. More storage. This is the first rumor on our list that we actually see happening. The 64Gb models have been speculated for quite some time, and, while we cannot know for sure, there’s nothing that could stop Apple from introducing them. The technology is available, and with a little tinkering it could be integrated into the phone while maintaining its sleek style.

6. A better camera. The iPhone 4 came with a totally different camera, one that put all of the previous ones to shame. The 5 megapixel camera is, in many people’s opinions, one of the best ever to be fitted on a mobile phone, and it has become so popular that it is the number one photo device on Flickr. Photos and videos turn out great, and dozens of apps (like Instagram, Camera+ or Hipstamatic) have thrived because of the quality of the device’s camera.

Right now, rumors have it that the next generation iPhone will come with an 8 megapixel camera (or even higher) that would be capable of capturing 1080p movies. This rumor is entirely plausible, and we totally see it becoming a reality.

5. NFC, or Near Field Communication. Tons of virtual ink has been spilled discussing this potential feature of the new iPhone. Near Field Communication, or NFC, would make it a lot easier for people to make purchases electronically, with their phones. The NFC system would be fully integrated into the operating system and it would allow you to pay for stuff quickly and easily just by swiping your phone across a special slot.

This would truly make your phone the most valuable gadget you have, and with other models already having NFC technology available, we think that the new iPhone will be capable of this as well.

4. The design. It has always been a contest of prototypes right before the launch of a new iPhone. Ever since the first one’s launch, designers (and Photoshop enthusiasts) have battled to come closest to the real deal. In the case of the newest iPhone, there are two major rumors going around. The first puts the design extremely close to the one the iPhone 4 has, with little to no changes at all.

The second rumor would have us to believe that there would be some changes, but nothing too drastic. Here are two of the speculated new designs.

3. September launch. Even though Apple hasn’t announced they would launch the new phone once the new iOS comes out, people have been quick speculating as much on their own. And this is one rumor that hasn’t originated in any one place, but rather it’s something that everybody is thinking of / hoping. But we’re just two full months away from seeing if this will be the case.

2. A bigger screen. Thanks to a couple of leaked photos, everybody can agree now that the new iPhone will have a bigger screen. Just a couple of weeks ago, while updating Nuance in the App Store, the developers accidentally left in a photo showing an iPhone with a substantially larger display. This sparked a whole new series of rumors, and it is now widely believed that the phone will have a larger screen. Here’s the photo that triggered it all:

1. More power. This is one aspect where there’s little to no debate. The new iPhone will come equipped with more power, and people are taking this as a fact. The new A5, dual core processor that’s currently fitted to the iPad 2 is the most likely contender to be on the new iPhone 5, and there’s even talk of it having more RAM – 1Gb, as opposed to 512 Mb the current phone has.

And this is the one rumor we think is most likely to be true. For the rest, we’ll just have to wait and see.
