Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 Review

There are so many devices that invaded the tablet market that users have difficulties when purchasing one. There surely are some great tablets out there. So, that’s why we thought to let you know more about Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 in this post.

Many users see Galaxy Tab 8.9 as Galaxy Tab 10.1 in a smaller body. Even if there’s no perfect or optimal size established for a tablet yet, Galaxy Tab 8.9 seems to be just the right size if we are to take into account the other tablets Samsung has come up with: Galaxy Tab 10.1 and Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus.

In what the design and body of Galaxy Tab 8.9 are concerned, there are few slight differences between this one and Galaxy Tab 10.1. These differences point to the fact that the speakers have been repositioned from the sides to the bottoms.

Measuring 9.1 x 6.2 x .34 inches, Galaxy Tab 8.9 weighs 447 grams which makes it be slim and light. The size of this device seems to be just perfect and if there’s no noticeable visual difference in matters of design, you’ll notice some in the overall experience.

The size of Galaxy Tab 8.9 is the right one to make both Web pages and documents appear life-size. Packing a 16:9 PLS TFT LCD, Galaxy Tab 8.9 features a 1,280 x 800 pixels resolution. So, this tablet comes in a smaller size but brings a higher pixel density that makes text have a smoother appearance.

The device comes with two cameras: a 3MP camera on the back and a 2MP front-facing camera, which is nothing different from the tablet that came before. The rear camera is great even if it can be even better than this if we take into account Sony Tablet S.

Galaxy Tab 8.9 packs a 1GHz dual-core processor and 1GB of RAM which makes it feel just like 10.1 when using. Even if you put the two tablets (Galaxy Tab 8.9 and Tab 10.1) side by side, you won’t be able to tell the diference in their performance. Or at least you must pay utmost attention to notice anything in that matter.

Coming with a 6,100mAh battery, Galaxy Tab 8.9 managed to score 9:21 in the intensive video test, feature that places the tablet on a higher level than other devices of this type available on the market.

In matters of software, Galaxy Tab 8.9 runs Honeycomb 3.1 and Samsung’s latest TouchWiz interface offers some interesting optimizations. At the bottom of the screen you will find the Mini Apps tray that contains utility apps like task manager, calendar, notes, calculator and others.

The thing with this tray is that you can view it only when you pull it up from the bottom of the screen. So, when you open a Mini App, this one will float as a window on the top of the running application. Thus, you’ll be able to take notes while you read for example.

Other features Galaxy Tab 8.9 brings include: 802.11 Wi-Fi a/b/g/n,Bluetooth 2.1, GPS. The tablet didn’t take only the good parts from 10.1 but those less appealing, too. Thus, you’ll get no microSD memory expansion and you will still have to use Samsung’s adapter to recharge the internal battery. The tablet lacks HDMI output as well.

There’s no difference between Galaxy Tab 8.9 and its big brother 10.1 when it comes to web speed. They’re both the same. The device also comes pre-installed with Adobe Flash 10.2.

Though it’s just a matter of preferences, Galaxy Tab 8.9 seems to be easier to handle and its size more appropriate for a tablet. You’ll have to pay just $449 for the 16GB version and $549 for the 32GB one. If you want to go for 10.1, then you’ll have to pay just $50 extra for each of the version you choose.

  1. I really like the 10.1 Galaxy Tab, but I think it would be a bit too big for taking on trips with me. I love traveling, so I want a tablet that is portable yet can do whatever I ask of it. Since the Galaxy Tab 8.9 has just about the same hardware as the larger 10.1 inch tablet, I don’t think I’d be missing out on much. When I am waiting at the airport or bus station, I usually pull out my iPhone and catch up on shows or watch a movie. I don’t always have space on my phone for storing all kinds of movies, plus the screen can get annoyingly small. So instead, I stream using the DISH Remote Access app from my employer DISH Network. It is great because any channel I subscribe to can be streamed to my phone. Even recorded shows and movies can be streamed. Plus, since the screen is bigger on the 8.9, it makes TV watching more pleasant! I’m want one more and more every day!
