After the success of the first two games and 1998′s Starcraft, Blizzard had ample reason to continue the series. However, after spending more than a year on the ill-fated Warcraft Adventures some people wondered when Warcraft III would ever come out (or if it ever would). Blizzard’s rebuke to naysayers landed with a huge thud in 2002, cramming a boatload of innovations and improvements into a neat human and orc-flavored package. The quintessential sword-and-magic strategy game, it doesn’t disappoint the third time around, and the good news is there are still plenty of matches waiting for you on Battle.net, Blizzard’s online gaming service.
3D graphics, two new playable races, many types of neutral creatures, heroes that would actually level up and gain abilities, a low unit cap (placing even more emphasis on heroes), artifacts, artifact stores, mercenary units and a storyline more convoluted than the roots of the World Tree Nordrassil combine to form a truly addictive game. For those innovations, sheer quality of gameplay and the fact that it spawned DOTA and World Of Warcraft, Warcraft III is the best RTS of 2002.
