Twitter has risen to new heights this year and as 2010 comes to an end they’ve kindly started sharing some statistics.
Possibly the most interesting stats you can get from the micro-blogging platform is the number of users and tweets managed this year. To this extend Twitter’s press release doesn’t disappoint.
No new number of Twitter users, so lets call the summer’s 190 million unique accounts as more than decent. The number of Twitter messages, or tweets, this year has reached an astonishing 25 billion.
At 65 million tweets per day this comes to us as no surprise but what’s more interesting among Twitter’s announcement is the list of tags that had the best trends in 2010.
In other words, here’s Twitter’s Top Ten Tweets:
Number 10 goes to…
Pulpo Paul.
I was never interested but it seems that millions of people found interest in an octopus called Pulpo Paul.
The Twitter interest in Pulpo Paul is related to his actions as this particular octopus made some predictions for the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
Number 9 is taken by…
Harry Potter & the Deathly Hallows.
It seems that lots of kids have Twitter accounts. I’ll admit to that being somewhat mean but I reckon the favorite wizard of Hogwarts is seriously loved by the birds.
And by birds I mean by people who tweet a lot.
The 8th spot goes to…
Justin Bieber.
It seems that this young artist has been tweeted so many times that he’s more important than wizard stories. Part of Justin Bieber’s success is related to his music career but more’s needed to make for a Twitter trend.
The rest of the tweeting mania linked to Justin Bieber came from the controversy spinning around him and the hate building up.
Sitting in at “lucky” number 7 is…
Google Android.
Finally, something we can sink our teeth into. Technology does still matter on twitter so Google’s Operating System couldn’t have failed us in the popularity ranks.
The latest smartphone released that’s running Android didn’t help it get better ranks either.
The number 6 spot is covered by another item close to our heart…
The Apple iPad.
The infamous Apple tablet PC is where the tech field leaves Twitter Top Ten. As a consolation, the iPad did get the most tweets in 2010 in the technology field.
In fact, because of the iPad, the new iPhone and their new version of the iOS Apple simply dominate the Twitter Technology Top Five.
We’re halfway there and #5 is occupied by…
The Vuvuzela.
The king of noisemakers at the 2010 FIFA World Cup was so annoying it went a very long way on Twitter.
Now that I think of it I can’t remember many tweets related to the World Cup that didn’t express hate for the Vuvuzela.
So here we are, the runner up, the one who missed the podium finish, number 4 goes to…
The Haiti Earthquake
The biggest natural disaster to come in 2010 came and went leaving destruction in it’s wake. The suffering of people from Haiti and the rest of the world gathering various efforts to help found its way on to the micro-blogging platform.
Bronze, the number 3 spot is awarded to…
Inception.
Inception is one of the tastiest movies created in 2010 featuring Leonardo Di Caprio and a deep psychological theme.
It was so good that it even impressed the creators of South Park to create a satiric episode based on the Inception movie.
Silver, second place…
The FIFA World Cup.
No matter what advertising slogans say or what the media wants you to believe, football is still a great crowd maker.
Held in South Africa, featuring some great surprises, the king of sports has simply flooded Twitter’s servers. There have been massive tech problems after every single game.
The winner, number one, the champion of tweets is…
The Gulf Oil Spill.
The BP Oil Spill topped off everything because it was a disaster. Worse off, the Gulf Oil Spill was a man made disaster and this made things worse.
Remember how I said South Park satirized Inception in an episode? When it came to the Gulf Oil Spill it was featured in three of their episodes.
The Gulf Oil Spill concerns spread over Twitter like you wouldn’t believe. While I was surprised to see some of the entries in this Top Ten of tweets, I’m not surprised to see this win.
