The God Particle – Possible Discovery

Yet to be discovered, the Higgs Boson (commonly known as ‘The God Particle’) is a hypothetical elementary particle, predicted to exist by the SM (Standard Model) of particle physics. This particle first came into existence as a solution to current inconsistencies in the Standard Model. In the recent years, a series of experiments were conducted in order to find conclusive data that the Higgs Boson exists. Currently, the LHC (Large Hadron Collider) is being used to perform experiments towards this matter in the field of particle physics.

The God Particle remains the only elementary particle predicted by the SM that has yet to be observed in particle physics experiments. Its discovery is imperative in order to attempt an explanation towards the origins of mass in elementary particles. In spite of other theories that can explain the origins of mass (theories known as Higgsless models), some experimental evidence regarding The God Particle would assure scientists of their theories and answer some vital questions in the field of particle physics.

Recent events regarding the experiments conducted by the Large Hadron Collider suggest that the Higgs Boson issue is near at hand. The scientists involved in the project chose not to rush to any conclusions yet; not until more conclusive data is obtained related to this particle physics breakthrough.

At this stage of experimentation,Europe’s particle physics laboratory (CERN) does not comment on persistent rumors, although it seems two independent experiments conducted by the Large Hadron Collider strongly suggest the existence of the Higgs Boson.

During those two experiments, a particle with a mass of 125 GeV (thought to be The God Particle) was found. This value is similar to the one predicted by the Standard Model, giving a possible answer in Higgs Boson’s existence. The vital missing piece of the puzzle is believed to provide all the other particles with mass.

The detailed rumors suggest that a particle with 125 GeV and a relevance of 3.5 sigma was observed during the conducted experiments at hand. This relevance level (3.5 sigma) should be enough in order to claim evidence of the phenomenon, but scientists are trying to acquire  a significance level of 5 sigma to claim evidence of a discovery with no flaws.

There could be some errors in the display, given that in past experiments all particles with masses between 114 GeV and 141 GeV were ruled out as candidates for the missing particle of the Standard Model.

No comments followed this discovery, simply because the project itself is still a work in progress. With the delaying of data coming out to the public, the most probable date would be 13th December 2011, when a seminar was scheduled in order to present any significant results.

Breakthrough or not, the latest discoveries of the experiments conducted can only represent good news for particle physics.
