Yesterday I spoke of the U.S. Army’s new weapon, the XM-25 as a Counter-Strike solution for the military.
Well, meet the U.S. Ari Force’s solution to Top Gun for PlayStation 3. The American Air Armada have taken up no less than 1760 Sony consoles and joined them together.
Part of the joining process of the Sony PlayStation 3s we have 168 separate graphical processing units and 84 coordinating servers.
I’m not sure what they’re doing with all of these PS3 strung together but I do know what they’re not doing. Sadly, because the Blu-Ray capability has been eliminated, no games will be run by the brilliant console.
According to the U.S. Air Force the string of PS3s will be used for research into AI development, fast processing of satellite pictures and the enhancement of radar.
Here’s another interesting thing, according to the U.S. Air Force, this swarm of game consoles and computers is officially the world’s 33rd largest computer.
Pretty impressive to some, pointless to others. But this hasn’t put the U.S. Air Force off. They claim that the PlayStation 3 console they use for a base is good but could be better.
This might mean that in a few years time, when the PlayStation 4 comes around we’ll find the U.S. Air Force going out and buying about 2000 of those as well.
My best guess is that once they do that, they’ll first do some gaming and then turn the whole thing into some Top 30 entrant.
