It sounds weird but apparently this is actually happening, everybody’s favorite social network is now looking towards taking over dumphones. That’s not a typo, Facebook already has smartphone and mobile access so why not go one up?
Dumphones is the “tech” terminology used to refer to old generation mobile phones. Think stuff like Nokia’s legendary 3310 and extend all the way to the more recent, yet still limited, Motorola RAZR.
The whole process is the brainchild of a digital security firm called Gemalto that really wants a piece of the Facebook action. The company is so interested in collaborating with Facebook that they might actually make them Sim Cards.
As I’m sure most of you know, Sim Cards are the be all and end all of these outdated phones and unlike modern ones, you basically can’t do anything without one.
While many of you will consider this sort of thinking as the end of technological progress as we know it, there is reason in Gemalto’s Facebook madness.
When using a Facebook Sim Card and a dumphone you do away with what is a pain for most modern mobile users. You no longer have to have an Internet phone plan which can end up being a very costly proposition.
A dumphone with this sort of sim card would communicate to Facebook via SMS, particularly class 2 text messages. To be honest, I have no idea about what class 2 text messages are but I’m sure they’re like submarines and are part of Mark Zuckerberg’s world domination plans.
Even if they’re not, I’m not sure Facebook will really benefit from this sort of Sim Card technology. This is simply because I doubt those who are still using this sort of mobile phone are really interested in staying up to date with everything.
And staying up to date with everything your friends, family, country and so on do is just what’s Facebook based on.
