Ever since the European Commission came into existence lots of new rules and regulations came about, most being rather annoying but the new stuff on phone charging seems different.
That’s right, the EC has came about with the idea of phone charging being done using a standardized device. The idea seems to be enjoying the snowball effect because this week 14 phone making companies have agreed to back this plan up.
The so called universal phone charger would make for plus points to all sides. The manufacturers would find it easier and cheaper to outsource phone chargers and clients would get lots of benefits.
Possibly the biggest benefit of a standardized phone charger would imply that no more problems occur because of incompatible phone chargers.

Other advantages include a cost reduction because when you replace your phone you wouldn’t be forced to buy a new charger as well. Beside all of the regular, economic reasons behind the common phone charger regulations there’s also another major positive point to this idea.
By adopting a single charger model the carbon footprint of making new devices would be greatly reduced. Also on the ecology front, recycling would be much simpler.
All in all, it’s a wide array of plus points to the whole standardization and it starts to beg the question, why hasn’t this been though of before?
Among the 14 phone makers backing the procedures of the European Commission there are some very sound names such as Nokia, Research In Motion, Apple and Samsung.
Now, great idea it may be, but the adoption of the new regulations will take some time. According to manufacturers, the first chargers within standardized shape are expected to be available some time in early 2011.
I know what you’re thinking, a few months isn’t a lot of time. It’s not, but you see, the EC has had this plan out and under development since back in 2009.
Even so, the universal phone charger is expected to employ micro-USB technology.
