By Microsoft has finally started to develop a Start-Trek like holographic room. So, great news for all those waiting for something like this to come up. We all know that science-fiction has always inspired gadgets designers and manufacturers. And what Microsoft does is just to confirm this. Today, Microsoft Reseach has released this fascinating project.
This is still in the melting pot, though. We need some time before using the Holodeck technology. The Microsoft Research team has accepted this challenge and thus started to develop what they call the HoloDesk.
Therefore, with HoloDesk a 2D image will be projected down through a half-silvered beam-splitter onto the desktop below. The HoloDesk will use an overhead screen to do this. Between the beam-splitter and the screen there will be a webcam.
This one along with a facial recognition software will practically track the user’s gaze. In this way, the objects projected onto the desk will be will be viewed by the user as if they were really there. So, when you’ll move your head, the objects perspective will change too.
Therefore, all the movements of the user will be tracked within the desk-space with the help of an attached Kinect. Thus, you can manipulate the items that are projected. You can roll or juggle them as if they were real. Besides this, you can use paper sheets or other different objects to move the projected items.
