It’s obvious that in matters of robots we haven’t seen it all! Meka brings forth the most sociable robot. The invention of Professor Luis Sentis of University Texas at Austin, Meka’s robot has managed to get all the attention at the Intelligent Robot And Systems event that took place in San Francisco in September.
Robots have started to be invented for different purposes and some of the most interesting of them took the shape of alpha dogs and insect swarms. Apparently, inventors from this field of technology are now focusing on creating robots that are more sociable and that can be used in eldercare, medicine as well as education.
This is a tough task since scientists must use their skills to create a robot that would ressemble the human being in matters of sociability. Professor Lius Sentis together with Meka Robotics has managed to invent and create the most sociable humanoid head to which he attached an arm and torso assembly.
Though the robot cannot truly represent a human head, it still manages to be the most sociable robot so far. The Meka team could get to this result by using the high resolution FireWire cameras for each eye and by integrating DSP controllers. The robot also packs ROS and Meka M3 software stacks as well as zero-backlash Harmonic Drive gearheads in the neck.
Thus Meka team stated that “we worked closely with Professor Sentis to achieve a friendly anime aesthetic for the overall look, adding two 2DOF ears with RGB lighting for added expressive ability”. And they actually managed to achieve that!
The Meka team benefited from Professor Luis Sentis’ experience in force augmentation as well as his studies and research related to how the movements of humans can be augmented with the help robots.
Meka Robotics is know for supporting the Willow Garage Robot Operating System (ROS). This is an open source for personal robots. This one includes URDF descriptions, common sensor interfaces, RVIZ kinematic visualization as well as posture control for all joints.
