By A new scientific project is underway as the second-biggest structure created by mankind, with the purpose to answer some of the deep cosmic mysteries: The Massive Neutrino Hunter. This installation will be built beneath theMediterranean Seaand will act as a detector network.
Subatomic particles known as neutrinos are important for scientific research simply because they appear in absolutely everything in the universe. Although they are not noticeable by traditional means, these particles originate from some of the most violent processes in the universe, such as gamma ray bursts, quasars and even black holes.
Given that space neutrinos carry information regarding their origins, scientist are considering to built a detector, with its soul purpose of discovering these astrophysical neutrinos in order to study them.
The detector, called KM3NeT, will be placed at the seafloor of theMediterranean Seain an attempt to find and track neutrinos that make their way to the Earth. Once in place, the three cubic kilometers detector may serve to other scientific purposes, such as the study of bioluminescent organisms.
In terms of size, KM3NeT will only be smaller in comparison to the Gear Wall of China; sadly, no one will be able to admire its proportions given that it will be placed deep within the sea.
The goal of this project is to discover space neutrinos that originate from violent cosmic events, in an attempt to explain the origins of proton flux, cosmic rays, etc. A known fact is that these subatomic particles must be extremely powerful in order to get past magnetic fields from our solar system in order to reach the Earth. Once discovered, neutrinos can help to reconstruct pathways and maybe answer a lot of questions regarding the Universe itself.
Also, according to recent theories, neutrinos may travel faster than light-speed. If this is proven possible it could be the most important scientific breakthrough made by mankind in almost a century.
