Twitter Starts Focusing on the Money

When I first saw Twitter release the Top Ten Tweets of 2010 I thought it was a bit early but now I understand why they did it.

It’s because they were clearing their workload because for the last half of 2010 they’re getting a new focus for the micro-blogging platform. That new focus seems to be the business end of the whole affair, the money, the profits.

Now I’m not saying that Twitter isn’t going to pay attention to their actual service any more but the finance part seems to be getting more important. A recent deal saw Twitter gain $200 million in new finances.

The extra cash flow is also related to Twitter’s value rise. In the latest evaluation the website was said to be worth no less than $3.7 billion.

All good news for Twitter it would seem but in business things aren’t always simple. Wait, scratch that, they’re almost never simple. The new investment saw Twitter add two members to the board of directors.

One of the new board members at Twitter may be familiar to you. He’s named David Rosenblatt and you may have heard of him because he’s boss of DoubleClick.

Since DoubleClick is a digital advertising group expect to see more add action on your Twitter page soon. This isn’t just my assumption, Twitter’s official press release includes a new focus on profits, remember?

The business of Twitter saw more people change positions. The most notable of the micro-blogging site’s leadership changes is co-founder Evan Williams who will be standing down as chief executive to focus on product strategy.

This could be the sort of move that will see Twitter users continuously pleased with the website as opposed to displeased by intrusive advertising.

The position of chief exec will be filled by Dick Costolo.

There are a few other changes going on but probably not worth the same impact on the site experience. My guess is that Twitter will continue to thrive.

Speaking of which, the latest reports indicate that the website now has 175 million registered users and all of them are serviced by just 300 employees.
