By According to some recent studies done by the European Commission the Internet is getting up to speed on the old continent.
The studies revealed that in July 2010, approximately 29% of broadband connections in Europe were running at 10 Mbps or more. According to the same EU Committee while this is good news, there’s still quite a way to go.
European Broadband lines past 10 Mbps were counted at just 15% of the total number of connections of a year ago. This means that over one year the number of high speed broadband connections doubled.
High speed is a relative term however, if the bar is raised beyond 10 Mbps the numbers fall quite drastically. For example, only 5% of all Broadband connections in Europe can run at 30 Mbps.

If the target speed is 100 Mbps the number of connections that can achieve this falls to just 0.5% of all connections possible.
According to the European Commission, by 2020 the target for broadband usage is that every Internet connection runs at 30Mbps or more.
That sounds impressive but there’s more in regards to the future of European broadband Internet. By the same year, 2020, the the Commission plans to have at least half of all European households connected at speeds upwards of 100 Mbps.
The growth of Broadband connections in the EU looks promising but has one massive problem. The mobile broadband networks grew by 45% over the last year.
Europe’s leaders in broadband Internet access are Denmark and the Netherlands where broadband internet penetration rate has gone past the 80% margin.
