Nintendo isn’t in the best of shapes financially and, worst of all, they aren’t doing very well in terms of competition with all the other gaming giants.
Sony’s Playstation and Microsoft’s Xbox 360 are doing brilliantly in terms of hardware and all of their platforms have a serious lineup of “strong” games thus Nintendo is lagging even further behind.
All projections and all of the rumors would point at Nintendo’s next move being an entry to the smartphone gaming market.
This would please investors, smartphone owners and Mario enthusiasts all around the globe but somehow Nintendo isn’t very convinced about this move.
Even though they are blatantly aware of how their Nintendo 3DS isn’t doing brilliantly despite a considerable cutback in pricing and the Wii U isn’t exactly having customers rolling in desperate to buy one.
According to Bloomberg, Nintendo still doing pretty good in terms of cash reserves, with estimates pinning them down at around $13.7 billion.
In this sort of situation, the next decision for Nintendo could be quite the crucial one as it could mean how and why Nintendo’s future is decided.
This must be why in previous statements, Nintendo wasn’t very interested in targeting the smartphone gaming market. Officially, they still aren’t, but a few leaks have been telling us otherwise.
Who knows, perhaps the upcoming Gamescon convention would have Nintendo unveil more than the “grand plan” to bring some serious hardcore games to their 3DS handheld or their Wii U.
Stuff like the infamous Super Mario 3D Land or the racing counterpart that is Mario Kart 7, even Star Fox 3D and Kid Icarus: Uprising is part of what Nintendo’s 3DS platform has been missing and delaying them or not bringing them out at all would simply mean losing a great deal of money they invested in the technology.
When it comes to the smartphone area of gaming, the customer base is clearly enormous but Nintendo will still have to wave by the decision to buy into or to go their own way in R&D.
After that is settled, everything will sort of snowball into us seeing enormous Nintendo franchises like Mario in the iOS or Android app market.
