3D Gaming, may not be as hot as we thought

It seems that my original premonitions on 3D technology and its involvement into the gaming scene may have been accurate.

Despite a change of heart I and many others had when we found out that 3D technology has more substance than just being the latest thing, the gaming sector isn’t really interested in it.

The first tip offs came with the relatively low volume of sales that were registered in the 3D TV department. Another setback for 3D becoming popular was the low cinema ticket sales.

It only really got into the gaming side of the story once the 3D tech that we got the true alarm signals out.

For starters, the new Nintendo 3DS wasn’t received with as much interest as predicted. In fact, Nintendo is still a bit overwhelmed by how many people by the regular version of their mobile gaming platform as opposed to the more high tech 3DS.

The real nail in the coffin of 3D gaming is to come from developers however. In a time when gaming seems to be all about going online and massive multiplayer opportunities developers consider 3D gaming not to be worth it.

Sure, 3D gaming has a small market of enthusiasts but that’s pretty much it. And a small market that costs a lot of money to work with and develop will certainly not attract many developers when there are more than viable alternatives to pushing this form of entertainment forward.

Electronic Arts was the first to announce that because of very slow 3D Gaming sales they will be dropping efforts on it entirely. The official statement was given by EA’s CEO John Riccitiello who said that because of the business case 3D Gaming seems to make against itself they will be focusing investments in other sectors, most likely the ones above.

It seems that along side sales and developers there are still so many people and investors that go as far as to consider the technology irrelevant.

The way I see it, if a giant the likes of Electronic Arts openly admits to not being interested in pushing 3D Gaming as well as the whole 3D phenomenon forward there’s only one thing that will happen.

3D will soon go back into its box and stay there for around 10-15 maybe more years until it spikes up again. I for one can still remember a spike of interest in 3D and all its fun since the early nineties so who knows what’s going to happen next.
