Cyborg Beetles: Future Military Spies

 

American scientists are on the verge of making cyborg beetles a reality. Researchers from theUnited Statesare getting close to successfully creating cyborg insects that may serve purposes like spying and recon operations. This project was made a reality with the funding received from theUSAarmy, cyborg beetles being used for military projects in the future.

Researchers so far created an unique battery that can be charged by the chemical processes that take place in insects’ bodies. The attached battery can provide sufficient energy to the other robotic augmentations, transforming ordinary insects into cyborg beetles.

This breakthrough was made by DARPA (The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency), and in prospect, it resembles the opportunity to use insects as spies by installing cameras, sensors and other electronic gadgets, making cyborg beetles the perfect spies in dangerous missions.

As it turns out, insects like bees can be used to detect mines or even weapons of mass destruction. The project transforms ordinary insects into cyborg beetles capable of being remotely maneuvered in order to achieve an imperative goal of a military operation.

Given that this new approach can actually prove to be viable, it seems that cyborg beetles can charge the battery for their whole life, providing energy to their robotic augmentations for a longer period of time.

Scientists so far believe that projects like cyborg beetles can have multiple applications in the modern society, thus creating lots of opportunities to use those augmented insects for different purposes.

Examples given by Daniel Scherson (chemistry professor) include the use of cyborg beetles for recon operations, detecting poisonous atmosphere in a sealed chamber and even Wi-Fi connections to transmit data.

Scientists working on this project are now trying to develop an even smaller battery, one that can increase the mobility of cyborg beetles, offering even the possibility of flight in order to achieve greater distances in less time.
