Sony Ericsson Takes Different Approach to Unlocking Bootloaders

The moment many smartphone enthusiasts wished for has finally arrived, well, at least it has for Sony Ericsson, and even for them it’s somewhat limited.

In a what’s a weird mix between enthusiasm, hacking curiosity and a wish to improve customer involvement, Sony Ericsson have announced that they plan to allow something unprecedented.

Their Xperia smartphone lineup now receives the “benefit” of users getting public access to the unlocking of the boot loader their Android OS’ uses.

Now, between you and me, unlocking boot loaders in android phones has been happening for some time, what Sony Ericsson plans to allow owners to do this differently.

The Japanese and Swedish alliance went on to announce via their blog that they will make the entire process legal so owners who unlock their Android phones can’t be prosecuted.

Eliminating this fear would allow for more people to “hack” into the Android Operating System and eventually create countless opportunities for new applications or improvements and tweaks.

Basically, the possibilities are endless and what Sony Ericsson is doing is now is enabling it to happen.

While this all sounds like there’s a lot of promise it is somewhat of a severed lineup of Sony Ericsson smartphones which doesn’t include all of them.

The list, at the moment, includes all four models of the upcoming 2011 Xperia line of phones, namely the Xperia Play, Neo, Pro, and Arc.

Apart from this open-sorucelyness moment, Sony Ericsson still warns potential users that if they strain the hardware too much and burn it out warranty covers won’t always be available.

The same applies for the eventual Android upgrades and so on, Sony Ericsson did their best.

If I’m allowed to sum it up; even though there isn’t much of a difference in what Sony Ericsson are offering, it could change everything.
