Nokia and Microsoft Partner Up

We knew the Finnish at Nokia were in trouble lately as other manufacturers came up to take some market share. We also knew that Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 sales haven’t been exactly the cream of the crop.

Many haters would love to see these two companies go down as a result of these problems but in a world of economic openness, the possibilities are endless.

This is how we’ve just been informed that Nokia will be teaming up with Microsoft for what’s called a “broad strategic partnership”.

I know it sounds awfully boring-business like but the simple fact of the matter is this. If Nokia comes up with the hardware and Microsoft comes with the OS that offers the most popular brands in the world of software you’ve got a winning recipe going on there.

If there’s something that Windows Phone 7 devices lacked, it definitely wasn’t the marketing, the brand image or the software bundles. It was two things that brought down sales of the Windows Phone 7.

The first problem they had was that while these smartphones were that they came out late. Microsoft came to the whole touchscreen OS powered phone quote a while after the market had been settled.

The other problem came up in how Microsoft’s Windows Phone smartphone technology was nothing revolutionary as it should have been given the extra time they had to be developed.

The thing is, both of these problems should be solved by teaming up with Nokia. At the other end, Nokia now stands an excellent chance at clawing back the “leader by far” market share it always had in this cellphone business.

And why not, getting a windows live account and a proper Microsoft Office on your smartphone does seem like quite a temptation. Especially if you get Nokia quality and technology in the same package.

Everything is fine and dandy, but what’s going to happen with Nokia’s current smartphone operating system, the Symbian OS?

Well this is a bit of a surprise as Nokia tells us they expect to sell about 150 million more devices powered by it but most of these sales will not be done by them.

At the moment, Nokia plans to franchise the Symbian OS and leech some money off it too. At first sight I wasn’t really pleased with that thought but after a few considerations I found an answer as to why.

You see, the Chinese and Indian market are pretty hungry for smartphones that actually work, unlike the cheap knock offs available. This is where, even though considered outdated, the Symbian OS may come in handy.

I’m a fan of Nokia’s slogan and I guess this is the first major reality its affected by “Connecting people”.
