Acer Turns to Windows Phone 7

As it happens, Nokia’s alliance with Microsoft may already end up increasing the success of the Windows Phone 7 mobile operating system.

Acer is one of the manufacturers that haven’t really been paying attention to Windows Phone 7 up until this decision.

Pending it however, they seem to have had a change of heart and they announced that they are now interested in running the Microsoft OS on their mobile devices.

The first Acer smartphones powered by Windows Phone 7 could turn up as early as this fall and it would even benefit from the latest update Microsoft offers for their mobile OS.

It’s at the moment in early development stages and it will be called something like Windows Phone 7.5. Obviously, thats a bit of an exaggeration.

The only thing we know about the latest update from Microsoft to come to the world of smartphones is known internally as Mango.

The Taiwanese at Acer must have had a bit of an epiphany as they now claim that they are turning their attention to Windows Phone 7 because it’s every bit as customizable as the Android OS they are currently using.

To be honest it will be very interesting to see what Acer can do with WP7 and just what hardware they’ll be offering to go with it.

There is one slight bit of concern about Acer’s attempt at making a Windows Phone 7 smartphone is the launch date they planned.

You see, round about the same period, sometime during the fall, Nokia will also be releasing their first Windows Phone 7 devices.

I doubt Acer can genuinely compete with Nokia in terms of hardware, particularly if they use the same actual software to power them.

Perhaps this sort of competition and pressure will have Acer really push themselves to create a new and better product than Nokia might end up with.

On the other hand, there’s always the possibility that the Finish will create a premium product whereas Acer will provide a low-cost alternative with the latest version of the Windows Phone 7.
