How To Use iTunes To Remove Duplicate Media Files

We’re not going to talk about how great iTunes is but we cannot ignore the fact that it comes with some great features and options. One of them regards the duplicate media files which I am sure you have plenty of. When it comes to computers, the thing with duplicate files isn’t that much of a problem since there’s lots of free disk space. The problem is when you sync your iTunes library to one of your portable devices. Unlike computers, these come with limited space.

In this case, duplicate media files count. So, the solution is to remove the redundant files. iTunes comes with an option to help you do this.

1. In order to start removing your duplicate media files with iTunes, you will first have to go to the Music section in your iTunes Library.

2. To see all the duplicate files, go to File and then to Display Duplicates. All the files that have the same name will thus be displayed. These files might have a different length, though.

3. Click on File and hold down the Shift Key at the same time and then select Display Exact Duplicates.

If your music library contains a great number of files, then this method might take some time as you have to manually delete each duplicate. The duplicate files will be deleted only from the library and not from the hard disk, too. In this case, you can go for CopyTrans  and remove the duplicate files from both your library and hard disk.

Here’s what you have to do to delete duplicate media files with CopyTrans:

1. The first thing to do is to close iTunes and then donwload the CopyTrans executable file. Extract it and then run it.

2. CopyTrans doesn’t need installation as it’s a portable tool. When you run it, CopyTrans will scan your iTunes Library for duplicate files.

3. The duplicate media files found will be categorized in different albums. So, if you want to delete the duplicates, you have to click on the album and then on the Remove From iTunes And Move To Trash button. Make sure you confirm that you want to delete those files. This way, the duplicates will be deleted from both your library and hard disk.
