Barnes&Nobles’ Nook Tablet is out and about and if you own one already, then you should know that there’s a way to root it. Being unable to install apps you like might get really frustrating. So, that’s why a root method has been created. Unlike the first root which was temporary, this one is said to be permanent lasting after a reboot. It will not unlock the bootloader but will allow you to sideload Android apps and uninstall those Barnes&Nobles apps you are not interested in.

So, here’s what you have to do to root your Nook Tablet:
1. You need to enable the USB debugging mode before going any further. Since this setting is hidden on your tablet, you will have to donwload the APK app and then open it. You will see the “Install Blocked” message after you click the Package Installer. You shouldn’t worry. Just click “Settings”.
2. You can now access the hidden Android settings menu of your Nook. The next thing to do is to allow installations for unknown sources and click the Development button. Make sure you check the two “USB debugging” boxes and uncheck the “auto-mount” box. That’s what you have to do in order to enable USB debugging.
3. Once you’ve enabled the USB debugging mode, you will have to download Nook&Zergy and USB drivers and extract them to the new folder you will create. You can name it c:/ntroot using the letter of your default driver.
4. Extract the runmefirst.bat. file after that and then unplug your Nook and plug it to your computer using USB. Go to your computer’s Device Manager and right click on the Nook Tablet entry. Select Properties from here and then hit Update Driver and Browse My Computer. Select the folder you’ve created earlier and press Install Anyway even if you get a warning from Windows. The Nook Tablet should now be shown as Android Composite ADB Interface.
5. Return to the runmefirst.bat dialogue and hit the key it says to in order to continue. Run NookandZergy.bat. from the folder created earlier. You will then be asked to hit the “Y” key to continue and once again to root your device. You should see several commands once your tablet is rooted.
6. Get back to the NookandZergy.bat window and press “Yes” to install the gApps. Your Nook tablet will restart now.
7. After rebooting, you will have to disconnect the tablet from your computer. When you go to the Settings menu and select search, you will no longer see the Barnes&Nobles Search but the Google one.
8. Press the Settings button you see in the Search screen and then select Search Settings. Make sure you select “Searchable items”and then check the Library box.
9. Once you get back to your search, you will have to search for a launcher you’re interested in and install it. You may go for Launcher Pro, Go Launcher or ADW Launcher. With the 3rd party launcher, you’ll be able to install and run different apps from Android Market. And that’s about all!
