As you know already, iOS 5.0.1 as a beta version for developers has just been released. With the latest firmware out and about, many of you are probably interested in jailbreaking it. Well, you can do that if you manually point the already existing RedSn0w client to the .ipsw file and then let the tool do its job. Therefore, this article will provide you with this tethered jailbreak that works with iPhone 4, 3GS, iPad (the original one) and the newest version of iPod Touch.
Since RedSn0w doesn’t recognize the firmware at the moment, you will have to manually point it out. So, the things you’ll need for this tethered jailbreak include the standard edition of iOS 5.0 firmware, iOS 5.0.1 .ipsw file (that you will have to download from Apple iOS Developement Center) and of course one of the Apple devices mentioned above as well as the USB cord.
Before getting started, you will have to run iOS 5.0.1. on your Apple device. To update the OS, you will have to start iTunes and then click on the Recovery button. After this, you will have to specify the iOS 5.0.1 file to be applied. Since the are no simpler solutions at the moment and this is a tethered jailbreak, you will have to reactivate your Apple device each time it restarts.
Once that’s clear, you’ll have to follow the below mentioned steps in order to jailbreak iOS 5.0.1 beta.
1. The first thing to do is to download and then install RedSn0w 0.9.9beta7.
2. After you do that, you will have to open the application and go to Extras. Select Specify firmware and then go to the iOS 5.0 .ipsw file.
3. Now go back to RedSn0w front panel and put your Apple device into DFU mode. You’ll find the necessary instructions there.
4. You will then have to click on jailbreak and select the option to install Cydia. Don’t check anything else.
5. After jailbreaking finishes, you should see the white Cydia icon on the springboard. Put your device into DFU mode once again.
6. Go back to the main panel in RedSn0w and then to Extras. Now select Specify Firmware and make sure to point the program to the iOS 5.0.1 firmware file.
7. After you do that, you’ll have to go to Extras again and hit Just Boot. This should make your device start in a tethered jailbreak mode.
That’s all you have to do in order to jailbreak iOS 5.0.1 on one of the Apple devices mentioned above. There’s still no jailbreak method for iPhone 4S and iPad 2 users. We’ll let you know about it, when it’s available. Check the video below too if you need some extra help to follow the steps above.
