Android devices have certainly changed the way we see and use technology. Devices like smartphones and tablets stand for the continously increasing technology. Still, these products are a little more difficult to be used by disabled users. Therefore, here’s what you can do to make Android more accessible to disabled users.
Android comes with lots of features that focus on virtual impairment. Still, there are many applications you can use if you have difficulties in using the basic interface or features. Some of these features are mentioned above.
1.In the case of users with visual impariment there are some features that will improve their Android access. TalkBack, KickBack and SoundBack come pre-installed but not enabled. These offer nonvisual feedback.
To enable them, you will have to go to Settings, then to Accessibility. Now go to Enable Accessibility and choose one of the options mentioned earlier or even all of them.
Still, there’s a method that is even easier than this. All you have to do is to go to Android market and then donwload and install the Apps4Android’s Android Accessibility Installer for phone. Make sure you search for the “Access 4″ ideal when you get to the Android Market. Choose the package that suits you best.
Once you download and install the package, you’ll be able to enjoy features like Eyes-Free Shell, Rock Lock Music Player and IDEAL Item Finder. You can also opt for BIG Launcher. This will use large and high contrast icons that will definitely give your interface a boost.
2. Now for those users with hearing impairment, one of the best options is the Text To Speech Toy. This will help hearing-impaired users who want to communicate face-to-face with a person who can’t read the sign language. Another option is also Google Translate which is another powerful tool that will help these people communicate.
3. Users with motor impairment can make use of BIG Launcher (which has been mentiond above) and that costs only $1.39. What this does is to use smart arrangements as well as larger icons to make calls, open apps and so on.
People with motor impairment can also resort to Tecla Access. Though it’s still in work progress, Tecla Access promises to make not only Android devices but also other major smartphones and tablets more accesible. That’s because it will use the same equipment that has been used to operate powered wheelchairs.
