The Aftermath of CoD: MW3 vs Battlefield 3

While the hype and marketing battle between Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 and Battlefield 3 has ended, the real war is only beginning.

Just a couple of days off launch and Call of Duty seems to have been on the front page of every website, blog or gaming magazine out there, reviews have started coming in in their hundreds and scores have turned up with a bit of a surprise.

Like we’ve known for some time now, CoD: MW3 uses an old graphics engine, though it is refreshed and brings no innovation to the visual presence of the game whereas Battlefield 3 counters both aspects mercilessly.

It sounds like Call of Duty is losing out but actually, they’re the winners in this franchise, they’ve upped their game but they didn’t want to lose anything of what they had before, they’ve just tweaked the recipe.

Confirmation of their loving fans and the understanding of why Activision chose this route came with the company’s sales figures. Though unconfirmed by retailers yet, CoD:MW3 just broke records for pre-orders as well as first day shipments once again. This makes it three in a row for Activision.

Apparently more than 1.5 million people cluttered more than 13.000 shops in considerable await for their new copy of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. Preorders had set a blistering sales pace having managed over 9 million altogether so it’s pretty easy to see how and why the first day online was riddled with faults.

Though Activision’s minions have been able to sort out all issues on the server side, the initial success of CoD:MW3 has seemingly overshadowed the Battlefield 3 success.

Not really, while Battlefield 3 makes less headlines and has been rated by reviewers at around the same sort of scores as CoD:MW3, the newly unveiled Activision success seems to be getting an awful lot of flak.

Anti graphics, hateful messages about re-skinning and so on have managed to give CoD:MW3 user scores going as low as 2.0 on some websites, on one occasion even prompting a response from Activision’s developers.

Meanwhile, in EA’s stable, though slightly overcome by the success of the new Call of Duty game, they’ve already confirmed the development of Battlefield 4, the next installment in their franchise.

Ah, the world of gaming, always moving on, even if apparently not doing so.
