Second Life Viewer 2.0 – A Survival Guide

As most Second Life users know, Linden Lab has done it again! To say the long awaited viewer 2.0 was a disappointment for the majority of residents would be the understatement of the year. And yes it really is out of Beta and no, nobody knows why.

If like the author of this article, you have installed it and found yourself lost in the new “browser experience viewer” here are a few things you might find useful if packing up and moving to Blue Mars is not an option.

Quick FAQ about things that have moved and are now almost impossible to find.

1) Where is the Upload File button?
Go to the Sidebar/My Inventory/File/Upload file

2) Where is the Set Default Permissions button?
Go to Build/Options/Set default upload permissions

3) Where are the Profile Picks?
Go to the Sidebar/My Profile/My Picks
To add a new Pick click the “+” button at the bottom of the My Picks window.

4) Where can I set the Friends Permissions now?
Go to Sidebar/People tab/Click on the friends profile you wish to set permissions for/Go to the Notes and Privacy Tab/Click the permissions you wish to grant. Yes you really have to do it one friend at a time now.

5) Where is the parcel info (coordinates and permissions)?
In viewer 2.0 by default you will not see the parcel coordinates and what you can’t do on the parcel (rez objects, fly etc).
To view that click on the Location Bar and then turn “Show parcel properties” on, click again and turn “Show coordinates” on. This will fix the problem and you’ll be able to see as usual the parcel coordinates etc.

6) Where are the media controls?
Go to the higher right corner of the viewer and right next to the small speaker icon you will find the media control icon. Click it to open the menu.

How can I close multiple windows at once since the “close all windows” menu has disappear!
Open the advanced menu(Ctrl+Alt+D) and then go to shortcuts. Here you will find a lot of the old buttons that you used to love including the Close All Windows button.

7) Where is the Statistics Bar and the Lag meter?
In Viewer 2.0 these have been moved to the Advanced menu(Ctrl+Alt+D to make it appear) in the Performance Tools bar.

Hopefully these answers will help ease up your frustration as you’re transitioning from the old viewer to the new one.
