There’s an ever growing trend recently of games, real ones not the “written over the weekend” flash variety, going free.
Free to play has been around for a while, especially in the MMORPG variety with varying levels of success but it’s only recently that we see the “giants” offer it.
We saw stuff like World of Tanks come into the public eye with a great deal of success.
Then Blizzard made a momentous decision to make World of Warcraft free (sort of) and while we’re not certain what effect it had, it was received with mostly appreciative reactions.
Evidently, there’s no denying, free stuff isn’t easy to pass on, but what does free to play gaming mean to the future of our favorite fun making activity?
What I’m trying to say is this, is free to play gaming worth it?
Well, as far as I’m able to work out, it is, but not for everybody involved in the process anyway. Not so long ago, the richest people in the gaming industry were the developers.
Most of us can still remember passionate children in bedrooms making millions of dollars with the game they developed over the weekends.
Nowadays that’s almost entirely gone and games can’t make it properly big unless they are promoted by a big publisher or associated with a big developer.
Unless you have one of these at your disposal the best chance you have at making a name for yourself in the world of gaming is offering your product free to play.
Overall, regardless of the situation at the moment, it seems like free to play isn’t ready to show us a world as cheery as one might think.
To be honest though, free to play gaming interests me on a different level. As a gamer, it’s easy to fall in love with saving money from purchases and putting them towards better hardware.
That’s good, but as it happens, most gamers would easily play a game with poor graphics if it has great gameplay, great multiplayer or whatever other features.
In this case, could it be that Free To Play gaming doesn’t really make that much sense?
Also, while I do think that World of Tanks is an epic free game, I’m struggling to think of another from the same range.
All of the really good games actually cost money. In fact, some of the best tanks in World of Tanks are easily available if you’re willing to spend some money on buying in game currency.
We all know that nothing in this world comes free but with gaming it is starting to look a bit weird when faced with the facts.
There are plenty of games out there that are genuinely free, free to play, will not cost you a penny in addons or holiday limited edition specials but they don’t have enough of a substance to be worth your time playing.
From a business perspective of your life, free to play games that offer no more are actually only worth it if you think your time is worth nothing.
Let me give you an example on that front. Blizzard is giving you the chance to play WoW for free but they’re not exactly keen on giving Diablo III away are they?
