Steam is a wonderful platform and Valve have really changed the way most of us think about purchasing games and how many used to think about game piracy.
Sadly, due to some issues with ungrateful or unfriendly people from the Steam forums, your data may have been compromised. Yesterday, the company’s co-founder Gabe Newell had sent out an announcement about the event.
The actual hacking occurred on Sunday, November 6th and while there’s still an investigation on the “damage” done, Steam already knows the gist of it and is ready to advise you on what to do.
Though the initial message can get a man panicked, the situation is not as bad as it could be but you should still take the necessary precautions.
After all, whereas Steam has cautioned you on the worst situation, it would be downright stupid not to take any action to help yourself.
That action is to change your passwords immediately:
- Start with the one you use for the Steam application (the store). Initial attacks took place on steam forums but whereas losing your messages and the likes may be an issue, losing your money as your credit card data gets passed around is a lot more troublesome.
- Change the password for your steam forum.
Notes:
- Each of the passwords you change, make it a strong one that contains both letters and numbers as well as uppercase characters and symbols.
- Last but not least, activate Steam Guard. It can be annoying but it works and when it comes to your money being spent online, you can never be too cautious.
- A final step would be not to save credentials on your computer, regardless of it being a laptop you might lose or a desktop that could be hacked into itself.
There’s only been a handful of users that have been affected and even so, most of the data that’s been stolen was encrypted so you’re probably safe. However, probability is not what i’d put my money on, especially when hackers are involved.
