Judging from a quick overview of the sales figures for Call of Duty: Black Ops my best guess is that the reps are getting some really fat bonuses.
I’m yet to play test Call of Duty: Black Ops but when a game sales enough copies to make the developer 1 billion dollars, they must be doing something right.
What’s more impressive than the 1 billion sales figure achieved by COD: Black Ops is the very short time window it needed to achieve such success. Since it’s launch and up to when Activision released the sales reports only six weeks had passed.
Once you take into equation the speed at which the figure was achieved only two titles count: Call of Duty and Avatar. If the all time stats are concerned two more titles need to be added.
The $ 1billion sales elite club includes the Michael Jackson’s most successful album, “Thriller” and James Cameron’s “Titanic”. While these titles don’t have much in common, Avatar was made by the same director as Titanic so some sense comes into play.
Getting back to the Call of Duty: Black Ops game we find that other impressive statistics are related to it. Among the most notable is the frequency of play.
On Xbox alone, Black Ops owners log in more than once a day and on every single occasion play for at least one hour. It’s this sort of almost “addictive” behavior that made COD: Black Ops register more than 600 million hours of playtime globally.
There’s more than enough to like about Call of Duty: Black Ops but two things stand out. There’s the great multi-player action and the Blizzard connection.
Basically, Blizzard are the sort of chaps that are living legends in the world of gaming. It’s no surprise that when they have anything to do with game development the end result is nothing short of amazing.
When all is said and done I guess that’s what Call of Duty: Black Ops has turned out to be.
