The well-known StarCraft franchise got its second title in 2010. About a year later, Blizzard, its developers, decided to release the Started Edition which replaced the game’s demo. The content provided by StarCraft II: Starter Edition is free for everyone, but limited compared to the full game, and wider unlike the trial versions or the demo. You only need a Blizzard account and an internet connection and you can start downloading and playing the game immediately.

Firstly, in the single player mode you can play the first four missions from the campaign. These include the first three Mar Sara missions and a choice between the first mission of Tychus and Dr. Hansen. Furthermore, two challenges and four custom maps are available. The first two challenges, playable in the Starter Edition are Tactical Commander and Covert Ops. The custom maps can only be played with the Terrans, against the AI, and include Xel’Naga Caverns, Shattered Temple, Discord IV, and High Orbit. These may be changed over time, allowing the gamers to experience more content offered by StarCraft II.

Secondly, if you want to play in multiplayer games, note that there are several restrictions. Besides having only the same four maps, and being able to command only the Terrans, you cannot use versus and co-op matchmaking, chat channels, the party system, and most important you cannot play on custom maps. However, the good part is that you are able to play with or against players that own the full game – these matches will only be restricted by the maps you have in your Started Edition.

Moreover, any progress you make in the campaign and all the achievements you earn in StarCraft II: Starter Edition will be saved directly to your free Blizzard account and will be available after you install the full version.
